Vale launches the Teluk Rubiah Scholarship Programme

Elite scholarship programme to target Manjung’s top SPM achievers, modelled after Malaysia’s top scholarship programmes.

MANJUNG, June 12– Vale in Malaysia launched the Teluk Rubiah Scholarship Programme (“TRSP”) today. The programme, modelled after some of Malaysia’s most prestigious scholarship programmes, is designed to provide opportunities for the most exceptional students in Manjung to pursue a world-class tertiary education that prepares them for a global career.

According to Leonardo Paiva, CEO of Vale in Malaysia, TRSP is conceptualized as a strategic youth-centric programme that supports Vale’s inclusive development agenda in Manjung. “Manjung’s greatest assets lie in the dynamism of the youth living in the district. We are investing heavily to provide the students with an environment that promotes creativity, cross-cultural exchange, and holistic growth.”

“We also believe, beyond the attainment of a university degree, education needs to be wholly enriching, so the scholarship proposition is designed to ensure that Manjung’s best talents will truly get what they deserve; a world-class education that can prepare them for future career in the mining industry,” Leonardo added.

The scholarship application is open today until 26th June. Click here to learn more about the Programme, Eligibility Criterias's and access the Application Form.

Successful candidates will receive a full sponsorship from Vale to study engineering or commerce at an accredited internationally-recognised university*. The sponsorship will also cover living allowances, quality accommodation, learning resources, expenses for a potential semester placement overseas, and other relevant wellness support for the students throughout the duration of their studies.

Vale plans to enrol up to 10 students in the pilot phase of the scholarship programme, which comprises multiple intakes until 2025. The students’ composition will also reflect Manjung’s diversity, aligned with Vale’s global commitment to provide equitable opportunities for women. Upon the completion of their tertiary education, scholarship recipients will be assessed and considered for employment at Vale, where they may begin a global career in the company.

TRSP forms the centerpiece of Vale’s MYR5.7-million Youth Empowerment Plan (YEP@Vale) project for Manjung. Launched in November last year, the aim of YEP@Vale is to provide inclusive educational opportunities and support for the youth living in the Manjung district.

Designed with long-term continuity in mind, initiatives planned under YEP@Vale cut across various stages of the youth development journey. It includes free tuition classes and ‘Tunas Seni’ art classes for children from low-income families, sponsorship for local educational institutions that support neurodiverse learning, annual SPM workshops, and ‘Piala Vale’, a programme that nurtures public speaking skills amongst the local youth.

A three-year programme, YEP@Vale is a continuation of Vale’s commitment to support Manjung’s social development. Thus far, Vale has invested close to MYR60 million on social investments in the district since it began setting up the Teluk Rubiah Maritime Terminal (TRMT) a decade ago.

“Local experts from Manjung form an important component in Vale’s global talent ecosystem. As we continue to bolster our presence in Malaysia, we look forward to providing even more opportunities for local experts to build a truly global career in the mining industry with us. The scholarship programme is one of the ways for us to do this,” Leonardo concluded.
