1t.org is the trillion trees platform of the World Economic Forum
Vale has joined the 1 trillion trees platform (1t.org), an initiative that is part of the World Economic Forum’s efforts to accelerate nature-based solutions in support of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). 1t.org tracks partner companies, giving more transparency and integrity to their commitments and actions to conserve, restore and grow cultivate trees and forests around the world. In order to pledge on 1t.org, companies are only eligible if they commit to setting an emissions reduction target in line with the Paris Agreement. “We are honored to be part of the 1t.org movement, engaging in a global dialogue of innovative solutions to expand restoration around the world. Vale’s 2030 Forest Goal integrates conservation and recovery with economic benefits, in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda. Our goal is to protect and restore 500,000 hectares outside our operating sites,” said Eduardo Bartolomeo, the CEO of Vale.

In 2019, Vale committed to six sustainability goals aligned with the UN’s 2030 Agenda. One of them is Vale’s 2030 Forest Goal, a voluntary commitment to protect and restore 500,000 hectares of biomes in Brazil, especially the Amazon, outside the company’s sites. This involves protecting 400,000 hectares and restoring 100,000 hectares. In relation to conservation and protection (focused on preserving high-quality native biomes and maintaining carbon stocks), the company is working in partnership with seven conservation areas and in support of REDD+ projects in Pará, encompassing 165,000 hectares.
On the restoration side, between 2020 and 2023, we contributed to the recuperation of more than 12,000 hectares through impact businesses that operate in sustainable production chains, carried out through Fundo Vale and a network of partners. This model focuses on boosting businesses that offer an attractive balance between risk, return and positive social and environmental impacts on land use. The target of 500,000 hectares is in addition to the more than 1 million hectares that Vale already helps protect around the world through compensation or voluntary actions. Of this total, 800,000 hectares are in the Amazon, where the company has been present for almost 40 years.1t.org 1t.org is a World Economic Forum initiative that serves a global movement to conserve, grow and restore 1 trillion trees by 2030.
