 Vale's Archive

Vale is a long-term partner of China and one of the first companies in the world to export iron ore to China.

Our first shipment of iron ore was sent to China in 1973, a year before the formal diplomatic relation between Brazil and China was established. In 1994, Vale opened its office in Shanghai in order to strengthen the company presence to develop the Chinese market.

Where are we?

Currently, we have three Collaboration Hubs in China, which are located in Shanghai, Beijing and Qingdao.

What do we do?

We sell mineral and metal products in China market and buy equipment, material and services from China for our global operations.

There are some key milestones in our partnership with China:

In addition to operations

Vale’s partnership with China goes beyond business. Since 2008, Vale has joined local NGOs in China in providing disaster relief and post-disaster reconstructions.
On May 12th, 2008, an 8.0-scale earthquake hit Sichuan Province. Vale donated RMB 2.5 million to China Youth Development Foundation (“CYDF”) for the rebuilding of three Vale Hope Schools in the quake-hit area, helping the affected students go back to school. One of the schools was merged into a local school in 2018, while the other two schools are still benefiting around 450 local students every year.
On April 14th, 2010, a 7.1-scale earthquake hit Qinghai Province. Vale donated RMB 2 million to CYDF for the rebuilding of the fourth Vale Hope School in the quake-hit area, which benefits more than 300 students every year.
On April 20th, 2013, a 7.0-scale earthquake hit Sichuan Province. Vale donated RMB 2 million to CYDF and RMB 1.1 million to One Foundation to support disaster relief and post-disaster reconstructions. The donation to CYDF was used to provide financial aid to quake-affected students, purchase education facilities for Vale Hope Schools in Sichuan Province and build Vale Hope Kitchens in 8 quake-hit schools. The donation to One Foundation was used for the reconstruction of a disaster reduction community center in Ya’an City and for supporting One Foundation in holding technical seminars and developing training programs for disaster prevention and reduction.
On January 29th, 2020, Vale announced donation of RMB 3.3 million to Chinese Red Cross Foundation for the purchase of medical supplies which were used in the ICU ward of Dabie Mountain Regional Medical Centre in Huanggang City, Hubei Province. Later in May 2020, Vale donated 80,000 masks, as well as other epidemic-prevention supplies, including thermometers, to support the teachers and the students at Vale Hope Schools to return to school safely.
In July 2021, Henan Province was hit by downpours and floods. On August 6th, 2021, Vale announced donation of RMB 3 million to China Youth Development Foundation to help rebuild 2 Vale Hope Schools in the affected areas as a support to the post-disaster reconstruction.

On October 18th, 2022, Vale announced donation of USD 5.81 million to support Central South University (“CSU”) in establishing a new laboratory for low-carbon and hydrogen metallurgy, which aims to boost China's steel industry to speed the decarbonization process up and achieve green development.
