Environmental Control Center

Vale’s Northern System Environmental Control Center is a voluntary initiative designed to monitor environmental parameters related to mining, ore processing, transportation, and iron ore loading. The center operates remotely, using instruments and sensors with alert setpoints that trigger notifications to our operations.

The system uses predictive models trained by stored data to improve our management of ESG business risks, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, regulatory standards, and ESG principles.

Arari Rural Development Center

Supported by the Vale Foundation, the Arari Rural Development Center (NDR) serves as a hub for innovation and disseminating sustainable rural technologies based on permaculture. These technologies can be used by communities and families to enhance access to high-quality food, implement sustainable family farming practices, promote sustainable inclusion in supply chains, and provide environmental education.

Activities conducted at the center include water impoundment management and cleaning, irrigation, seed and seedling banks, soil preparation, biofertilizer tanks, symbiotic cropping, the production of biofortified foods, and ecological sanitation.

One of the center’s standout initiatives is a beekeeping program in partnership with the State University of Maranhão (UEMA). Bees play a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance of ecosystems, as they are needed to pollinate a significant portion of native plant species as well as economically important crops. Beekeeping contributes to the restoration of tropical forests and the conservation of existing forests. Bee populations also serve as a bioindicator of environmental quality in protected areas, as well as playing a vital role in agricultural pollination services.
