What is the asset's purpose?
Since 1996, the project has been monitoring bioindicators and carrying out environmental education activities aimed at residents, employees and visitors, also seeking to strengthen the fishing activity of local communities.
Its priority is to strengthen fishing activity, carry out bioindicator monitoring and promote environmental education actions, in addition to promoting interaction between Vale and local communities, employees and visitors.
What has already been done?
The courses in mariculture and handicrafts with shells in the region directly benefited more than 500 residents who are part of the local fishing community. The environmental education and training activities promoted by the project reached 2,000 people.
Vale also offers technical support in the area of mariculture to associations that have oysters and mussels as a source of income. Another action promoted is the cultivation of microalgae for food in mariculture, an initiative that has already allowed the release of more than 20 million shrimp post-larvae in Sepetiba Bay.

Seahorse Project
Seahorses, endangered animals, are found on rocky shores, mangroves and coral reefs. Despite their small size, these animals are great predators of smaller environments, contributing to the environmental balance of these ecosystems. Due to their predatory, sedentary habit and because they remain close to the bottom, seahorses are considered indicators of environmental health. Therefore, these animals are monitored monthly, in order to identify and analyze parameters that demonstrate the health of the population and the environment in which they live.

Guiana dolphin project
The Guiana dolphin, an endangered species that can be found in Sepetiba Bay, has an important functional role as a top predator in the region's marine biota. Every week, monitoring is carried out throughout the Bay, providing data on population estimates through photo-identification and registration of species in catalogues. In addition, the recording of behavior and acoustic communication, performed from the recording of sound signals, is analyzed so that researchers can understand the dynamics of the population.

At Fazenda Marinha, visitors can visit the seahorses produced in captivity by the Cavalo-Marinho project. The initiative, which includes environmental education activities, aims to make people aware of the importance of conserving these animals and the habitat where they live.

Fazenda Marinha is open to visits by external and internal audiences (employees and third parties). Visits to the project's headquarters are guided by environmental analysts who present the initiatives and conservation actions developed by Vale at the port terminals in the region.

So that it can contribute to the environmental conservation of the region, the project promotes courses in the surrounding communities, in schools or in situ on the native marine fauna of the Sepetiba Bay and the Costa Verde of Rio de Janeiro.

The marine fauna repopulation program, implemented in 1996, emerged with the aim of complying with a condition issued by the Environmental Agency for an LI (Installation License), with the objective of expanding the iron ore storage yard at the Guaiba Island (TIG).
Until 2018, the program carried out the marine repopulation of Sepetiba Bay, with post-larvae (20 days of life) of pink shrimp (F. brasiliensis), cultivated at FURG (Fundação Universidade Rio Grande), in Rio Grande do Sul, and acclimatized in the Marine Farm of the TIG.

How did it work?
As soon as they arrived, they were placed in a tank for acclimatization, during an interval of 10 to 15 days, allowing them to adapt to the marine conditions of Sepetiba Bay. After this period, the species were released into the sea, concluding the project stage with the participation of community representatives.
