Health Management System

One of our ambitions is to be the safest and most reliable mining company in the world. We want to achieve zero fatal work accidents and minimize Occupational Diseases (PAK).

Towards this target, we made several efforts through the company's internal policies. In 2020, we set our Strategic Priorities in five pillars that will continue for the next 3-5 years.

  • Health, Safety and Risk

  • Human

  • Sustainability

  • Maintenance

  • Growth

The goal is to lay a solid foundation to be achieved in 2030 and 2050, towards a PT Vale that is safer, more reliable, competitive, sustainable and loved by the community.

We have an occupational health and safety management system that is contained in the Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability Policy.

Health Management Implementation

The production process and nickel in matte products have complied with safety, health and security requirements. We also ensure that our employees continue to work safely in the field by regularly holding Gemba, Open Talk, Safety Talk and Day of Reflection. These activities help us improve production safety performance.

  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) or rules for limiting hazardous substances for the manufacturing industry and electronic equipment adopted by the European Union since 2006.

  • ISO 17025:2008 regarding Competency Requirements for Testing and Calibration Laboratories.

The implementation of OHS refers to the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 1827/K/30/MEM/2018 concerning Guidelines for the Implementation of Good Mining Engineering Principles.

  • Our OHS management involves management and employees through the K3 Central Committee, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Manpower, and other stakeholders. The application of K3 covers the entire process of mining and production operations.
  • Compliance with K3 is the responsibility of the Head of Mining Engineering (KTT) and is evaluated by the Board of Directors through an assessment of the achievement of Key Performance Indicators (KPI).
  • Since 2020, we have launched a Safe Work Permit (SWP), as a standard that is applied globally across all Vale units.
  • Every year we also conduct an OHS compliance audit which refers to SMKP Minerba and the IMS–Environment Health and Safety Management System.
  • OHS Mining Workshop

  • Hazard Identification and Control Training

  • Personal Protective Equipment, Safe Work Permit (Issuer/Acceptor)

  • Working at Heights

  • Isolation & Lock Out Critical Activity Requirements (CAR)

  • Golden Rules

  • Contractor Safety Management System (CSMS)

  • General Induction Program (GIP)

  • Site Specific Induction Program (SSIP)

  • Risk Assessment (RA)

  • Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

  • Safety Talks

  • Critical Activity Requirements (CAR)

  • Safe Work Permit (SWP)

  • Field observations in the form of audits/inspections

  • Holding a monthly forum with contractors attended by PJOs from all PT Vale Indonesia, the company's partner

  • Annual SMKP internal audit for IUJP companies within PT Vale Indonesia

  • Request for SWP and JSA before carrying out work

  • Monitor and follow up on any violations that have been regulated in the Golden Rules (smoking and phone detection)

Obsession with Safety and Risk Management

We define five main behaviors as the basis of the company's culture. We place an obsession with safety and risk management at our core. We make decisions by putting safety and human life above other assets and outcomes by:

  • Identify and manage risks associated with activities for all stakeholders

  • Demonstrate leadership regarding security in an open and tangible way through measurable actions

  • Encourage conversation about security dilemmas, operational issues and controversial flags

  • Asking questions and showing genuine interest in the answers

  • Encourage everyone to express ideas and opinions of employees

  • Encourages learning from mistakes

  • Appreciate the plurality of profiles

  • Rely on the Vale Production System (VPS) to achieve:

  • Safe and environmentally responsible operation, assurance on the integrity of assets and employees.

  • Strengthening PT Vale's organizational culture through human resource development, standardization of best practices, operational discipline, and adherence to routines.

  • Floor Management Development System (FMDS) as a VPS tool to translate targets into KPIs, monitor performance, uncover problems, handle deviations, and improve performance.

  • In the Housekeeping Program, we make references to workspaces (work posts) to distinguish abnormal conditions from normal conditions, thus enabling employees to visually identify any unwanted circumstances and waste in the workspace.
