Our commitment in biodiversity

Protecting biodiversity is closely related to sustainability commitments. We have also included initiatives related to biodiversity in PT Vale's Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHSS) Policy, as well as specific policies on every environmental aspect. The initiatives we carry out are also in line with the material topics of reporting and the Principles of Sustainable Mining Management Based on the Sustainable Development Framework from the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), which are aligned with the Five Environmental Management Commitments for 2022.

The five environmental commitments that become our focus, namely,

  • Low carbon agenda,
  • Reducing the burden of landfills
  • Reducing the intensity of water consumption,
  • Reclamation of post-mining land and land rehabilitation outside the Contract of Work, as well as
  • Biodiversity conservation.

Flora & Fauna Conservation

PT Vale Indonesia recognizes the importance of biodiversity and deems it a subject intrinsic to its business, considering its richness, amplitude and value in maintaining life and ecosystem.

Reducing the Intensity of Water Consumption

We strive to optimize water use for every ton of nickel in matte produced, in accordance with PT Vale's Water Efficiency and Wastewater Pollution Load Reduction Policy. The policy in question can be seen at: https://www.vale.com/in/kebijakan-kami

The largest water demand is fulfilled by hydropower operations on the Larona River, with water sources from Lake Matano, Mahalona and Towuti. Water from the lake flows into the reservoir in the dam and is forwarded to the canal to drive turbines. The amount of water consumed is the same as the water taken from the lake, and no water is taken from the water stress area.

Total water consumption in 2023 reached 7,561,108 m3, equivalent to 7,561.1 megalitres. This consumption has decreased by aroound 11% from water consumption in 2022.

The Intensity Value of Water Consumption in 2023 is 106.9 m3/Ton Ni, lower than 2022‘s 141.77 m3/ton Ni, or 0.14 Megaliters/ton Ni.

Landfill or final disposal site (TPA) load reduction

In 2022, we continued our policy of reducing the burden of landfills with reference to the PROPER policy.

Waste management iscarried out through efforts to reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover (4R).

No hazardous waste is shipped internationally and there are no spills of environmentally hazardous waste materials.

Waste Management Performance

Land Reclamation and Rehabilitation

PT Vale is carrying out progressive post-mining land reclamation and watershed rehabilitation with a target of 70% of the land being reclaimed and rehabilitated by 2025.

Until the end of 2022, the total area of land being rehabilitated is 10,435 hectares in 13 regencies in South Sulawesi Province and 3 regencies in West Java Province.Meanwhile, a total of 4 million trees have been planted.

Realization of environmental management costs in 2023 was recorded at US$67,340,642 for the Sorowako, Pomalaa, and Bahodopi areas, representing an increase from US$20,142,498 in 2022.

Land Management and Biodiversity Performance

PT Vale carries out open pit mining activities, which has an impact on changes in the natural setting, ecosystems and biodiversity in it. To minimize the impact, every year we enforce an open area restrictions policy for mining activities, with reference to reclamation guarantee documents that have been approved by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The actual area opened for mining operations during the reporting period reached 230.16 Ha, bringing the cumulative area for mining operations by the end of 2023 to 5,667.73 Ha.

In accordance with the principles in the ICMM Sustainable Development Framework, PT Vale does not carry out mining activities in world heritage sites.

The implementation of post-mining rehabilitation at PT Vale always involves the local community who have received training, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the government, and other third parties.

Periodically, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) conducts monitoring and evaluation of the success, so that a land can be handed over to the Government through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (LHK).

The success criteria of this rehabilitation include land use standards, revegetation, and final settlement, in accordance with Ministerial Regulation No. 26 of 2018 and Ministerial Decree No. 1827K/30/MEM/2018 concerning Guidelines for the Implementation of Good Mining Practices.
